The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

This book is boring. In the real world, two weeks after Kristallnacht the US Department of the Interior produced a report on developing the terriftory of Alaska with a suggestion of settling Jewish refugees there. In the alternate history of this book that actually happens. That's a really interesting premise.

The main character, detective Landsman, is boring. And I don't understand his motivation for doing anything. He's an alcoholic with daddy issues and a failed marriage. Okay... A blurb on the back of the book called it "terrically funny" but it's not. Here's the type of humor in the book: Landsman's gun is refered to as a "shalom" (the hebrew word for peace) and piece is slang for gun. Popsicle sticks have more humor than this book.

I got to page 158 before deciding to set the book aside. You might like it. I don't know, it's just not for me.
